I’ve chosen a winner (see Free entry in to Script Doctor Eric’s screenplay contest for more info).

I had nearly a dozen loglines submitted and it was very difficult to choose a winner. I can honestly say that I didn’t get a single half-backed submission. So thank you to everyone who submitted.

The winner was Kenan S. Brack.

Title: Kung-Fu Degeneration

Logline: “After the tournament ends, several contestants find themselves in a final battle against an island of undead soldiers left behind from World War Two.”

What I liked most about his logline was that I got a good sense of what type of movie this was. It seemed very Zombieland to me. And with the success of Zombieland it seemed like a script that could generate some interest from producers.

My only suggestion would be to try and give a little more details. What tournament? Who are these people? And what’s at stake if they fail? Their own lives or all of humanity?

And maybe add a second sentence to really cap it off, something like: “Kung-Fu Degeneration is Survivor meets Zombieland with a World War II twist.”

Anyway, good luck to Kenan in Eric’s script contest.

I don’t usually recommend script competitions since most don’t offer much value. However, today I’m recommending one. Script Doctor Eric is having a competition and he’s agreed to read all the entries himself. He’s charging $35 for entry, however I highly recommend you pay an extra $15 ($50 total) and get entered into this contest and also get an abridged version of his screenplay notes service. This is real value. At a minimum you will get 1 page of notes from a professional script reader and at a maximum you might actually place in the contest. It’s really a no-lose situation. This is a great chance to get professional notes for only $50. Eric is going to be very busy the next couple of weeks! The contest ends on March 31st or when he receives 100 entries, which ever comes first.

If you’d like to enter this competition go here: http://www.scriptdoctoreric.com/2010/03/script-doctor-erics-screenwriting.html

Check out my post, Entering screenplay competitions, to learn more about what I think of screenplay competitions in general.

Good luck!

I get this question quite often:

“Will you read my script?”

I simply don’t have time to read people’s scripts.

I get the sense from a lot of people who want me to read their script that they’re hoping I’ll read their script, think it’s terrific, and then pass it along to some Hollywood heavy hitter who will buy it. There’s zero chance of that happening. Not because your script isn’t terrific, it very well might be. But I’m not in a position to sell your script any more than I am in a position to sell any of the 20+ spec scripts that I’ve written that are sitting on my shelf. Believe me, I wish I could.

If you’re serious about getting professional notes on your script (which is the absolute most you could hope for by me reading your script) I recommend Script Doctor Eric (http://www.scriptdoctoreric.com). His prices are very reasonable and he’ll provide a professional analysis of your script. If you don’t have friends in the industry who will read and critique your work you should seriously consider spending a few bucks and getting a professional script reader to look over your material before you submit it.

Script Doctor Eric dropped me an email today.

He’s having a query letter writing contest. If you are just starting out with your query letter this is a great way to get it reviewed for a very low price (he’s charging just $3 per submission) and you stand to win one of three very nice prizes – top prize being a full review of your screenplay. I can’t see not taking advantage of this if you’re working on a script. Write up your query letter today and send it over. Eric explained the contest like this: “What I plan to do is give everyone who entered a brief thought or two on on their query, and then use the winning queries as examples on how to craft effective letters.”

As some of you may know he’s a regular commentor on this site and his comments are always very good. He’s worked in script development and sold and optioned some screenplays as well.

So for just $3 at the very least you can get a couple of thoughts from a professional screenwriter on your query letter. What a great deal. The deadline for submission is on Friday April 17th (2009) so there is no time to delay.

Here’s the link to his site for all the details:
